Private Boat Tours Comino – Blue Lagoon & Cave Adventures
It’s a blue you won’t forget. Not the pale, washed-out blue of a winter sky, but a startling, electric, almost impossibly vivid turquoise that seems to glow from within. The first time you glide into Comino’s Blue Lagoon, the rest of the world just melts away. The chug of the boat engine fades, the chatter of the gulls softens, and all that exists is that luminous water, beckoning you in. As a Gozitan who has spent a lifetime on these waters, I’ve seen it a thousand times, and I promise you, that feeling never, ever gets old.
But here’s a secret most visitors don’t realise: the famous Blue Lagoon is just the beginning of Comino’s magic. This tiny, rugged island, nestled between Malta and Gozo, is a treasure trove of sea caves, hidden coves, and crystal-clear waters that you can only truly discover by boat. Forget the crowded, impersonal ferries; to experience the real Comino (*Kemmuna* in Maltese), you need to explore it like a local — with the freedom to drop anchor wherever your heart desires.

Why Choose a Private Boat Tour in Comino
Comino is one of the most spectacular destinations in Malta, known for its turquoise lagoons and dramatic coastline. Taking a private boat tour in Comino is widely considered the best way to explore the island.
Unlike large-group excursions or ferries, private boat tours let you visit hidden locations that most visitors never see.
With GOZOblu Private Boat Tours, you can:
- Avoid crowded tourist boats and ferries
- Explore secret caves and hidden lagoons
- Stop whenever you want for swimming and snorkelling
- Enjoy a flexible itinerary tailored to your group
- Experience the coastline with a knowledgeable local skipper
This personalised experience is why many travellers consider private trips among the best Malta boat tours available. Whether you’re visiting for a few hours or planning a full boat trip to Comino, Malta, exploring the island by boat guarantees incredible views and unforgettable memories.
Imagine this: the Blue Lagoon is packed, so your skipper says, “Mhux problema (not a problem), I know a quieter spot.” You then cruise over to the Crystal Lagoon, just as beautiful but with a fraction of the people. You can swim, snorkel, and explore ancient sea caves that are completely inaccessible from land. You can spend as much or as little time as you want at each location, creating a day that is perfectly tailored to you. This is the real Comino experience.

The Ultimate Comino Itinerary: A Full Loop Around the Island
A boat tour isn’t just about the Blue Lagoon. It’s about discovering a coastline riddled with natural wonders. On our 3-hour and 4-hour tours, we do a full loop around Comino. Here are the incredible places we’ll show you:
The Famous Blue Lagoon
Yes, it's famous for a reason. The water here is a breathtaking shade of cyan, thanks to the white sandy bottom reflecting the sunlight. It’s a natural swimming pool, sheltered and shallow in parts, making it perfect for a dip.
Cominotto Island
Opposite the Blue Lagoon lies the tiny islet of Cominotto — and it's one of the most special spots in the entire Maltese archipelago. It features a peaceful, shallow bay with a pristine sandy beach surrounded by dramatic cliffs, and a remarkable cave that cuts right through the island from one side to the other. Here's where it gets truly magical: we can take the boat to the open sea side of Cominotto, and guests can snorkel through the cave — which starts at ankle-height crystal waters and gradually deepens enough to swim through — and emerge directly onto Cominotto beach, finding themselves right in the heart of the Blue Lagoon. Some guests jump from the back of the boat and swim through the cave, stepping out onto the sand on the other side. It's one of those experiences that you simply cannot get anywhere else, and our guests absolutely love it. You may also recognise Cominotto from the big screen: Brad Pitt filmed scenes for the epic Troy (2004) here, and Madonna filmed scenes for Swept Away (2002), directed by Guy Ritchie, on this very island.
Crystal Lagoon & Caves
Just a short cruise from the Blue Lagoon, this spot is a local favourite. This perfect for swimming & snorkelling. We also take the boat right inside the Crystal Lagoon Caves so you can explore them from the water.
St Mary’s Tower & Lovers’ Cave
An iconic landmark built by the Knights of St. John in 1618. Underneath the tower, as it stands at the top of a cliff, there is a long cave called Lovers' Cave. At the end of this cave, there is a hidden sandy beach.
Popeye's Cave (*Għar Bla Saqaf*)
One of Comino's most dramatic natural spot. The roof of this ancient sea cave has collapsed over time, leaving a spectacular open-air grotto where sunlight pours straight down onto the turquoise water below. The nickname 'Popeye's Cave' comes from the 1980 film Popeye, starring Robin Williams, which was filmed in Malta. The cave's dramatic appearance featured in the movie, and the name has stuck with locals and visitors ever since. It's one of the most photographed spots on the entire island.
Santa Marija Bay & The Historic Church
It’s one of the few sandy beaches on Comino that offers completely different vibe from the rocky lagoons. The water is clean, shallow, and calm. We can stop here so you can walk on the beach and visit the historic Chapel of the Return of Our Family from Egypt.
The Hidden Battery Cove
On the other side of the island, at the back, lies St Mary's Battery. Underneath the battery, there is a small arch and a hidden cove that is only accessible by boat. It's a spectacular, secluded spot that many of our guests actually prefer over the main highlights!
The South Coast Caves & Elephant Rock
The southern coast of Comino is wild and dramatic. We'll explore the South Coast Caves, hidden coves that you can only reach from the sea and take you to the viewpoint for Elephant Rock, a massive natural rock formation that looks exactly like an elephant drinking from the Mediterranean.
- A Local's Secrets
The Best Time to Visit Comino
Timing is everything when it comes to Comino. Visit at the wrong time, and you’ll be sharing the Blue Lagoon with what feels like the entire population of Europe. Visit at the right time, and you’ll feel like you have the island almost to yourself.
The Morning Strategy (Beat the Rush)
The big tour boats and ferries start arriving at the Blue Lagoon around 10:00 AM. Our best advice? Start early.
If we start your tour around 8:30 AM, we can head straight to the Crystal Lagoon first to explore some of the caves while it’s completely peaceful, and then head to the Blue Lagoon. You will experience it at its absolute quietest — sometimes, our guests have the entire lagoon to themselves! After you’ve enjoyed the Blue Lagoon in peace, the big boats will start to arrive. That’s when we leave the crowds behind and continue our loop to the hidden caves and coves where there aren’t any people at all.
The Late Afternoon Strategy
If you prefer a later start, a late afternoon tour is also fantastic. As the day-trippers leave, a sense of peace descends on the island. The low sun makes the cliffs glow, and the water takes on a golden hue; it’s a completely different, magical atmosphere.
The Midday Strategy (Peak Hours)
If midday is the only time that works for you, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. During peak hours, the Blue Lagoon is at its busiest, but your skipper knows exactly where to anchor to find you the best spot in the lagoon so you can still enjoy the famous turquoise water. Once you’ve had your swim, we’ll move on to the quieter parts of the island, the Crystal Lagoon, the hidden caves, and the secret coves where you’ll often find you have the place entirely to yourselves.
We can assure you that any time you book, we will find a way to make it memorable. Some guests actually love the vibrant, buzzing atmosphere of the Blue Lagoon at its peak, it’s part of the Comino experience!

What Guests Say About Our Boat Tours Comino
Our guests consistently rate GOZOblu as one of the top providers of Malta boat tours. Many travellers say their Comino boat trip was the highlight of their visit to Malta.
How to Get to Your Comino Boat Tour Departure Point
We offer flexible departure points depending on where you are staying in the Maltese islands:
- From Malta (Ċirkewwa): If you are staying on the main island of Malta, we can pick you up directly from Ċirkewwa, right at the northern tip of the island.
- From Gozo (Mġarr Harbour): If you are staying in Gozo, we depart from Mġarr Harbour, which is easily accessible by bus or taxi from anywhere on the island.
Local Tip for Valletta Guests: If you are staying in Valletta, taking a taxi all the way up to Ċirkewwa can be slow due to traffic. Instead, it will be cheaper to get the Fast Ferry from Valletta directly to Gozo (Mġarr Harbour). Depending on the weather, it takes just 35-45 minutes and drops you right where our boats depart! After your boat tour, you can spend the afternoon exploring Gozo or having a lovely dinner by the harbour before catching the fast ferry back to Valletta.
What to Pack for Your Comino Adventure
Packing light is key, but a few essentials will make your day much more comfortable.
- Swimwear & Towel: Obvious, but essential!
- Sun Protection: High-factor sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are non-negotiable. The Maltese sun is strong, especially when reflected off the water.
- Reef Shoes or Aqua Socks: Highly recommended. Much of Comino’s coastline is rocky, and these will protect your feet and make it much easier to explore.
- Camera or GoPro: You will want to capture the colour of the water. An underwater camera is perfect for the Crystal Lagoon.
- Light Cover-Up: A t-shirt or kaftan is useful for when you want a break from the sun.
- FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a boat tour the only way to see the Blue Lagoon?
While you can get there by ferry, a boat tour is the only way to see the best of Comino, including the Crystal Lagoon, the sea caves, and the hidden coves under St Mary’s Battery that are completely inaccessible from land.
How long does a typical Comino boat tour last?
Our tours range from 2 hours to a full 8-hour day. Our most popular tour is the 4-Hour Half-Day Tour, which gives you enough time to do a full loop of Comino plus a touch of Gozo’s coastline without feeling rushed.
Are there toilets on the boats?
Our Premium Boat is equipped with a small marine toilet for your convenience. Our Standard Boat does not have a toilet on board. However, if you need to use facilities during the tour, we can easily make a quick land stop at Santa Marija Bay, which has public toilets. We try to avoid stopping at the Blue Lagoon for toilet breaks during busy times, as the queues for the dock and the facilities can be very long!
Is the Blue Lagoon always crowded?
It can be, especially in July and August. However, if you book an early morning private boat tour (starting around 8:30 AM), we can get you to the Blue Lagoon before the crowds arrive at 10:00 AM. Alternatively, a late afternoon tour offers a much quieter experience as the day-trippers leave.
Is it safe to swim in the caves?
We will let you know which are safe to swim in, as some have boats exploring all the time and although you can swim in them, it’s better to find a quiet one where you can have some time to enjoy. We have a secret location that our guests really enjoy for a peaceful swim! Your skipper’s number one priority is your safety.
What if the weather is bad on the day of our tour?
Your safety is our priority. If the weather or sea conditions are not safe for a tour, we will contact you to either reschedule or offer a full refund.
Taste, Explore & Discover Malta & Gozo
There is no better way to spend a day in the Maltese islands than out on the water, and Comino is our crown jewel. It’s a place of pure, natural beauty that will stay with you long after you’ve returned home. We’d love to be the ones to show you its secrets.
